How Quickly Do Bird Droppings Damage Your Car Paint in Ontario Heat?

Bird droppings aren't just unsightly — they're chemically aggressive and can etch into your clear coat. Here's the timeline and what to do about it.

The Chemistry: Why Bird Droppings Are So Damaging

Bird droppings contain uric acid (because birds use a different urinary system than mammals) that has a pH of around 3.5 — comparable to vinegar or lemon juice. This acidity directly etches into automotive clear coat on contact, especially when combined with Ontario's summer heat, which accelerates the chemical reaction. The damage isn't surface-level discoloration — it's actual etching into the clear coat layer.

The Timeline: How Fast Does Damage Occur?

First 12 Hours

In mild conditions (spring/fall temperatures, 60-70°F), bird droppings begin etching but damage is relatively slow. The first 12 hours typically show mild surface etching that might be cleanable.

24-48 Hours in Summer Heat (Ontario Summers)

This is the critical window. In Ontario summer heat (75-85°F+), the uric acid reaction accelerates dramatically. By 24 hours, visible etching usually appears — a dull halo around the bird dropping where the acid has chemically attacked the clear coat. By 48 hours, the etching is pronounced and likely won't fully buff out with polishing — it may require paint correction or clear coat repair.

72+ Hours

After 72 hours in summer conditions, the damage has typically gone beyond surface-level etching. It may require professional paint correction, and if the etching is deep enough, it could reach the basecoat, requiring paint layer repair.

Prevention and Quick Action

Prevention

Parking under cover (garage, carport, covered parking) is the most obvious prevention. For regular outdoor parking, some Ontario drivers use car covers during spring and summer bird season (April-June is peak). A ceramic coating provides some chemical resistance — while uric acid will still etch into ceramic, the etching happens more slowly, buying you more time before damage becomes permanent.

Quick Removal Strategy

If you find bird droppings on your vehicle: (1) remove them immediately — don't wait, (2) use a soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to gently lift the material without grinding it into the paint, (3) rinse thoroughly with distilled water, (4) dry immediately with a clean microfiber towel. If immediate removal isn't possible, cover the area with a damp cloth to slow the etching process.

If Etching Has Occurred

Light etching that leaves a visible mark but doesn't feel rough when you run your fingernail over it can often be improved with professional polishing — a one-stage machine polish can remove the outer layer of clear coat and blend the etched area. Deeper etching that you can feel (roughness to the touch) likely requires paint correction by a professional detailer with multi-stage polishing equipment.

At Seefi Auto Detailing, we assess bird dropping damage and provide honest recommendations on whether polishing will resolve it or if paint correction is needed. For severe etching, paint touch-up or professional repair is the only solution.
